Education B.A. in English, University of Notre Dame M.A. in English, Boston College Ph.D. in medieval and early modern studies, University of Colorado at Boulder Interests I explore the medieval, Catholic seeds of English Renaissance humanism, commonly believed to be a post-Reformation phenomenon rooted in Continental Protestant thought. In actuality, late medieval and early modern English writers link sacred and profane forms of authority to create a native republicanism that differs markedly from its European counterparts. My current projects include an examination of late medieval feminine sovereignty in the works of early modern Cambridge laureate poets, and a study of naturalized citizenship in England from the fourteenth through the seventeenth centuries. I am an ACLS Mellon Fellow for AY 2010-12, and would like to thank the American Council of Learned Societies and the Mellon Foundation for this wonderful privilege. Selected Publications “The Reformation of the Relic: Lydgate’s and Milton’s St. Edmund,” in a collection edited by Elizabeth Robertson, From Buddha's Belly to St. Bridget's Head: Sacred and Devotional Objects East/West (Palgrave, forthcoming). |
