She is the author of an influential study of colonial literature, Allegories of Empire: The Figure of Woman in the Colonial Text (Minnesota, 1993), which combines interpretive analyses of British novels in relation to the both India and the West Indies, and Ghosts of Slavery: A Literary Archeology of Slave Women's Lives (2002), which introduces new ways to examine women’s negotiations for power within the constraints of slavery. Her interests embrace the long historical perspective on colonial and postcolonial studies.
