The Major: 10 upper division courses

  • All courses used to fulfill requirements for the major must be 4 or 5 units.
  • All courses used to fulfill requirements for the major must be taken for a letter grade.
  • Seminars may not be applied toward requirements A (American Literature Courses) or C (REGS).
  1. 5 American Literature Courses:
    English 166A-C, 167A-B, 170A-C, 172C, 173A-C, 174A-C, 175, 176, 177

    Please note that 2 of the 5 courses must be prior to 1900:
    English 166A-C, 167A-B, 170A; (and 175, 176, 177 if on a pre-1900 topic)

  2. 1 Senior Seminar:
    English 183A-C, M191A-C; (and 180, 181A-B, 182E-F, M191D-F if on an American topic)

  3. 2 Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality in American Literature Courses:
    English M102A-B, M104A-E, M105 A-E, 106; (and 100, M101B-D, 103, M107A-B, 108, 109 if on an American topic)

  4. 2 English Electives: English 100-199 (excludes English 195 internship)

  5. OR

  6. 2 Upper Division American Culture Courses (both from one department)
