We do not offer a terminal master's degree. We do offer a PhD in English literature.
We do not offer these specializations at this time.
We receive approximately 350 applications. Our target is a class size of 12-14 new students on average per year.
The postmark deadline for applications and supporting materials is December 1. We guarantee review of all applications postmarked by this date. If you take the December GRE subject test, scores will be reported sometime around the third week of January. The admissions committee does its best to review as many applications as possible, but it cannot guarantee that applications completed a month after the deadline will be reviewed.
There are no minimum scores required, but a combined score of 1300 (GRE verbal and subject test in literature) or individual scores of 650 can be used to gauge performance.

There is no suggested length for the SOP. In years past, it has averaged between 2-3 pages in length. You do not need to follow a specific format in regards to spacing or margins.
No. Professors can mail your letter directly to our department. It is also acceptable for university letter services to send copies of your letters to our department.ÂÂ Effective Fall 2010, recommenders whom you list in your online application may electronically upload letters of recommendation to the application website.
It is recommended that you submit one 15-25 page writing sample. This length provides for a substantial critical analysis of literature, yet is not burdensome for the reader to review. Ultimately, it is your decision how to best showcase your preparation and potential.
International students whose first language is not English must submit a TOEFL score.
A traditional first-year funding package consists of:
* $21,000 stipend
* full fees (including non-resident tuition for the first year, if applicable)
* $3000 summer stipend
In subsquent years, funding is typically provided in the form of teaching assistantships, with an additional fellowship awarded in the dissertation year. In these intervening years, students may also apply for additional fellowships that are awarded on a competitive basis by our Graduate Division and by other entities both within and outside of UCLA. All funding is contingent on the student's remaining in good academic standing and making satisfactory progress toward the degree.
Applicants interested in applying for the Cota Robles Fellowship should indicate this in the online application and complete the related portions of the form.
Review begins in early January. The process begins with fiveÂÂ two-member committees reviewing all completed applications, and then a three-member committee reviews the top 100. Forty finalists are selected from this group, and the entire graduate admissions committee convenes to finalize the selection of applicants offered admissions to the graduate program. Admissions offers are sent via email in February.
