This course provides an introduction to British literature written between 1725 and 1925. We will examine a range of authors, attending to issues of style and form as well as to changing cultural contexts. Along the way, we will also ask ourselves the challenging question--"What is literature?" Requirements: lively class participation, numerous short papers, individual writing conferences, and one longer final paper.
