SUMMARY:On Solidarity: Reflect and Restore
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Palestinian filmmaker Mohanad Yaqubi’s film\, “R21 AKA Restoring Solidarity\,” followed by a panel discussion featuring UCLA Professors Saree Makdisi\, Robin Kelley\, and Shannon Speed. The film centers on the growing struggle for Palestinian self-determination between 1960 and 1980\, which was supported by left-wing movements worldwide\, including Japan. This is illustrated by a collection of 16mm films by militant filmmakers from various countries\, dubbed and screened in Japan. Our discussion engages with the promise\, challenges\, and limits to solidarity commitments with Palestine\, while touching on the seminal role solidarity has played in the shaping of and discourse around uplifting Palestinian struggle. \nRegister here to attend. \nQuestions about the event?\nEmail: englishevents@ucla.edu

The box office opens one hour before the first program of the day.\n \nSLAM\nU.S.\, 1998 \nLos Angeles restoration premiere  \nAfter being charged with drug possession\, small-time marijuana dealer and rapper Ray Joshua (Saul Williams) must navigate the Washington\, D.C.\, criminal justice system. Though he faces a long imprisonment\, his dreams for his future are ignited by writing instructor Lauren Bell (Sonja Sohn)\, who introduces him to the slam poetry world. \nFilmed by documentarian Marc Levin in “drama-vérité” style\, the fictional story is fused with the real-world backdrop of the nation’s capital\, including the Dodge City neighborhood as well as an actual D.C. prison. Levin developed the story in collaboration with journalist Richard Stratton and the leads Williams and Sohn. Dialogue was mostly improvised by the actors\, and the poetry recited is their own. \nSLAM premiered to considerable festival success\, receiving the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival as well as the Caméra d’Or and Prix du Public at Cannes. The film capitalized on the growing popularity of poetry slams\, where participants recite spoken word poetry in a competitive setting. Saul Williams\, a trained actor with an M.A. in acting from New York University\, had previously won the Grand Slam Championships. He went on to release several critically acclaimed albums of both music and spoken word poetry. Artists and poets including Bonz Malone and Beau Sia populate the cast of SLAM\, along with individual guards and incarcerated persons. \nLike the powerful poetry in the film\, SLAM uncompromisingly tackles critical issues of criminal justice reform\, institutional racism\, societal expectations and violence. When Ray is booked into jail\, a guard rattles off the rates of Black men imprisoned in the District of Columbia\, followed by\, “Welcome to the D.C. prison. You might make it out\, you might not.” But\, as Ray begins to learn\, freedom is something that can never be taken from you.—Jillian Borders \nDCP\, color\, 104 min. Director: Marc Levin. SUMMARY:For a Resilient US Theater\, Post-Pandemic: A Panel Featuring Barbara Fuchs
DESCRIPTION:Livestream available via HowlRound TV on Wednesday\, April 3 at 1 p.m. PDT. \nFor a Resilient US Theater\, by UCLA researchers Barbara Fuchs and Rhonda Sharrah\, is part of Pandemic Preparedness in the Live Performing Arts\, a comparative transnational study on the resilience of theatre post-COVID funded by the British Academy. Between April 2023 and January 2024\, a team of researchers from the United States of America\, United Kingdom\, Canada\, Germany\, France\, Italy\, and Japan examined the lessons learned from the responses of the live performing arts sector and governments to COVID-19 in the G7 countries. The study’s aim is to support sector preparedness for future crises\, whether caused by new pandemics\, climate-related disasters\, demographic changes\, economic pressures or the impacts on the live performing arts of national and international politics. \nThe US report examines the lessons to be learned from the pandemic\, while highlighting longer-term trends exacerbated by the COVID crisis. Its conclusions and recommendations speak to theatremakers and stakeholders across the theatre ecosystem\, focusing on key issues of sector-wide strategizing\, advocacy\, and long-term thinking. \nVisit HowlRound Theatre Commons for full event information.

SUMMARY:The Uses of Hatred: A Symposium
DESCRIPTION:This event will propose that a range of disciplines across the humanities have shared and suggestive investments in questions of hatred. We will explore hatred as a human emotion not as it is simply decried or enabled in particular works of art\, but as it is in different ways put to use. In particular\, we will explore the uses of hatred in criticism: of art\, literature and culture. The day will bring together scholars and critics in literature and the visual arts\, who are also invested in a range of disciplines including psychoanalysis\, queer theory\, philosophy and anthropology\, in order to discuss hatred in\, and the hatred of\, a range of creative media. \nEach presentation will be followed by discussion with the audience\, and the day will end with a final roundtable reflection on hatred and the humanities. \nRegister here to attend the symposium. \nFor any questions\, please direct these to David Russell (djrussell@ucla.edu) or Sarah Kareem (kareem@humnet.ucla.edu). \nSchedule \n9:45am – Welcome and Introduction \n10:00am – 10:50am – Sarah Kareem (English\, UCLA): “The Art Lover and the Vandal” \n11:00am – 11:50am – Wendy Lee (English\, NYU): “Austen’s Hatred” \n11:50am – 12:10pm – Break \n12:10pm – 1:00pm – David Russell (English\, UCLA): “The Hatred of Criticism” \n1:00pm – 2:00pm – Lunch Break \n2:00pm – 2:50pm – Jeremy Melius (Art History\, University of York): “Deprivation and Delinquency in Ruskin’s History of Art” \n3:00pm – 3:50pm – Jaś Elsner (Art History\, Oxford University): “Image as Aggression in Courbet: about the polemical nature of L’Origine du Monde” \n3:50pm – 4:10pm – Break \n4:10pm – 5:00pm – Roundtable Discussion
