SUMMARY:Our Oracle-Ruin: The Arabic Poetic Tradition in Light of Gaza
DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Departments of English\, Comparative Literature\, Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations and the Edward Said Chair in Comparative Literature present a talk by Huda J. Fakhreddine\, “Our Oracle-Ruin: The Arabic Poetic Tradition in Light of Gaza.” \nRegister here to attend. \nIn the moment of genocide\, Gaza becomes a language\, a lens\, an interrogation\, a refutation of all that came before\, and a compass for all that comes after. This talk launches from the murdered Gazan poet Hiba Abu Nada’s poem\, “O How Alone We Are!” to present a reading of the Arabic poetic tradition through the lens of Gaza\, highlighting a long Arabic legacy of confronting time and its calamities with defiant “alone-ness.” \nThe talk will be followed by a Q & A moderated by Saree Makdisi\, Professor of English & Comparative Literature at UCLA. \nHuda J. Fakhreddine is a writer\, translator\, and Associate Professor of Arabic Literature at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of Metapoesis in the Arabic Tradition (Brill\, 2015) and The Arabic Prose Poem: Poetic Theory and Practice (Edinburgh University Press\, 2021)\, and the co-editor of The Routledge Handbook of Arabic Poetry (Routledge\, 2023). \nQuestions about the event?\nEmail: englishevents@ucla.edu

SUMMARY:Medieval Texts Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Medieval Texts Reading Group Winter 2025 Meeting\nFriday\, January 24\n3:00-5:00 pm\nKaplan 193\, UCLA \nFor our Winter 2025 meeting\, we will meet on Jan 24\,  3:00 – 5:00 PM\, in Kaplan 193\, and we will read a selection from Gregory of Tours’ Libri historiarum X (Ten Books of History) (in English and in Latin). Join us for a discussion of scandals\, revolutions\, and unruly nuns led by Prof. Jaime Kreiner (Professor and Robert and Dorothy Wellman Chair in Medieval History). A calendar of planned meetings is HERE. Handouts of each reading will be available during the group meeting\, but are also linked in the calendar below and can also be found HERE. \nThe UCLA Medieval Texts Reading Group welcomes undergraduate students\, graduate students\, staff\, and faculty interested in medieval literature. On the third Friday of each term\, we get together to discuss a text in English translation from across the Global Middle Ages and to think about what it tells us about its cultural and literary context. Each discussion will be led by an expert on the chosen text and its place in the wider medieval world. \nNo preparation is necessary (other than a brief skim of the text) and no expertise or medieval knowledge is required – only enthusiasm! Suggestions for what to read (or what kinds of texts to read) are very welcome. \nFor questions\, contact Matthew Fisher (fisher@humnet.ucla.edu)\, Basil Arnould Price (basilprice@ucla.edu)\, or Erica Weaver (ericaweaver@humnet.ucla.edu). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the UCLA CMRS Center for Early Global Studies.

SUMMARY:Poetics in Refusal of Settler Life: Mahmoud Darwish and the Question of Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Register here to attend. A light lunch will be provided. An RSVP is required to attend. \nJoin us for our Kanner Forum featuring Jeffrey Sacks\, Associate Professor of Arabic and Comparative Literature and Chair of the Department of Comparative Literature and Languages at UC Riverside. This talk will offer a reading of the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish in relation to poetic form and the generalizing and obliterating violences of settler life. Rather than exceptionalize the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people\, this talk studies it as an expression of the normative terms for western hemispheric existence and outlines the refusal of these terms in the poetic formulations and reverberations of Darwish’s poetics. To think the poetic in a time of genocide is also to think genocide in relation to the broader terms of settler life and the particular enactments of the Zionist state\, in order to articulate collective terrains of struggle through the poetic: a collective refusal of settler life in relation to the Question of Palestine. \nThe talk will be followed by a Q & A moderated by Saree Makdisi\, Professor and Department Chair of English at UCLA. \nJeffrey Sacks is Associate Professor of Arabic and Comparative Literature and Chair of the Department of Comparative Literature and Languages at UC Riverside. He is the author of a forthcoming book\, Poeticality: Anontological Form and the Critique of Settler Life (Fordham University Press) and Iterations of Loss: Mutilation and Aesthetic Form\, al-Shidyaq to Darwish (Fordham UP\, 2015). He has published a translation of Mahmoud Darwish’s Why Did You Leave the Horse Alone? (New York: Archipelago\, 2006).
