SUMMARY:Hammer Poetry Series: Rosanna Warren
DESCRIPTION:First an eminent poet\, as well as a literary critic\, translator\, classicist\, and painter\, Rosanna Warren reminds one of the protean genius of Max Jacob\, from whom she could hardly differ more\, yet of whom she has written an exemplary biography. SUMMARY:California Before America: Doing Without Dreams and Destinies
DESCRIPTION:Join UCLA English on Thursday\, April 10 and Friday\, April 11 for the Barbara L. Packer lectures featuring Kirsten Silva Gruesz\, acclaimed scholar of Latinx literature and the 19th century. In addition to her formal lectures\, Professor Gruesz will lead a graduate workshop\, which includes lunch\, at 12pm on April 10. An RSVP is required to attend. Please RSVP at the link below. \nRegister here to attend the lectures and workshop. \nLecture Schedule: \nThursday\, April 10 at 10:30am\, followed by a lunch workshop at 12pm\, in Kaplan 193: \nJust My Type: Following Latin(X) Letters Through the C19 and Beyond \nLetterforms\, whether hand-drawn or reproduced in print\, encode visual meanings that vibrate through texts. Following the traces of Spanish-serving printers and their equipment across the nineteenth-century US\, this talk argues that a more literal understanding of “LatinX letters” helps connect these earlier writer-artisans to contemporary poets. \nGraduate students and faculty are welcome to attend a lunch workshop with Professor Gruesz following this talk. The lunch workshop will take place at 12pm in Kaplan 193. \nFriday\, April 11 at 12:30pm. A light lunch will be served at 12pm\, in Kaplan 193: \nCalifornia Before America: Doing Without Dreams and Destinies \nWhere does California fit in American literary history? Pushing back against hypertrophic metaphors of golden dreams and disappointments\, of Manifest Destiny pushed to its continental margins\, this talk focuses instead on the early Pacific and on Indigenous world-making prior to and during the Spanish mission period to conjure alternate models of relating\, and relating to\, the past. \nKirsten Silva Gruesz is Professor of Literature at the University of California\, Santa Cruz. She is the author of over forty essays on Spanish-language print culture in the U.S. and LatinX literature and culture\, stretching from the colonial period to the present day. Her books include Ambassadors of Culture: The Transamerican Origins of Latino Writing (Princeton\, 2002) and Cotton Mather’s Spanish Lessons: A Story of Language\, Race\, and Belonging in the Early Americas (Harvard\, 2022)\, which was recognized with the Albert J. Beveridge Award from the American Historical Association\, the John Winthrop Award from the Colonial Society of Massachusetts\, the History of the Book Prize from the Society for the History of Authorship\, Readership\, and Publishing\, and the Early American Literature Book Prize. She is currently Co-PI of a multi-institutional Mellon Foundation-funded Crossing Latinidades working group\, The Latinx Past. \nQuestions about the events?\nContact Marta Wallien: mwallien@english.ucla.edu

SUMMARY:tagged 'Singapore': (Dis)embodied Desires and Digital Witchcraft
DESCRIPTION:Join UCLA English and the Text/Tech Lab for a poetry reading featuring writer-artist Marylyn Tan. \nDisseminating & dissociating—let’s get textual in the virtual. This poetry reading and Q&A session will focus on writing form(lessness)\, bodies\, queerness\, the occult and what used to be the wild west of desires with new names\, but has now become an endless spoon-feed of algorhithmic doom-scrolling. \nRegister here to attend. SUMMARY:Book Talk & Signing - The Cleaving: Vietnamese Writers in the Diaspora
DESCRIPTION:Join The Cleaving editors Isabelle Thuy Pelaud\, Lan P. Duong\, and Viet Thanh Nguyen\, alongside contributors Lan Cao and Le Ly Hayslip in conversation\, on Tuesday\, April 15\, 6:30 pm in UCLA Bunche 1209B. \nRSVP limited. Books sold & refreshments served. \n\n\nRSVP HERE TO ATTEND. \nThe Cleaving \n\n\nVietnamese Writers in the Diaspora \nThe first and only book to gather the voices and perspectives of Vietnamese diasporic authors from across the globe. \n\n\nEdited by Isabelle Thuy Pelaud\, Lan P. Duong\, and Pulitzer Prize–winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen\, The Cleaving brings together Vietnamese artists and writers from around the world in conversation about their craft and how their work has been shaped and received by mainstream culture and their own communities. This collection highlights how Vietnamese diasporic writers speak about having been cleaved—a condition in which they have been separated from\, yet still hew to\, the country that they have left behind. \nComposed of eighteen dialogues among thirty-seven writers from France\, Indonesia\, Kyrgyzstan\, Canada\, Australia\, Israel\, and the United States\, the book expands on the many lives that Vietnamese writers inhabit. The dialogues touch on family history\, legacies of colonialism and militarism\, and the writers’ own artistic and literary achievements. Taken together\, these conversations insist on a deeper reckoning with the conditions of displacement.
