You will not be able to pose questions to the roundtable from YouTube\, but questions will be taken on Zoom. \nDuring the 2021–22 academic year\, the UCLA Center for 17th– & 18th-Century Studies and William Andrews Clark Memorial Library will host the Core Program entitled “Victorian Apocalypse: The siècle at Its fin.” This program of lectures and presentations aims to reassess the ways in which the 1890s in particular as an era has strong associations with theories of decadence\, degeneration\, and disease. “Victorian Apocalypse” will draw attention to the significance of UCLA’s unrivaled collections relating to the 1890s\, especially the life and work of Oscar Wilde\, which are held at the Clark Library. \nIn The Birth of Energy: Fossil Fuels\, Thermodynamics\, and the Politics of Work (2019)\, Cara New Daggett identifies the Victorian era as the beginning of the “ideational” Anthropocene\, a “dawning consciousness” that human-industrial impacts “might be planetary and truly catastrophic.” This roundtable showcases new approaches to Victorian literature and culture that address this rising sense of the inseparability of the social and natural worlds. In dialogue with Elizabeth Carolyn Miller’s new book Extraction Ecologies and the Literature of the Long Exhaustion (2021)\, the scholars on this panel reexamine the Victorian period through the lenses of climate change\, infrastructure studies\, and the energy humanities\, focusing on the socio-ecological impacts of extraction and industry in the nineteenth century and beyond. \nPanelists:\nModerator – Neil Hultgren\, California State University\, Long Beach\nDevin Griffiths\, University of Southern California\nNathan K. Hensley\, Georgetown University\nSusan Zieger\, University of California\, Riverside\nRespondent – Elizabeth Carolyn Miller\, University of California\, Davis \n\nImage: Black Country Landscape by Edwin Butler Bayliss (1874-1950)\, Wolverhampton Art Gallery. https://www.wolverhamptonart.org.uk/ebb/

SUMMARY:Virtual Classrooms and Mercantile Mischief in Shakespeare’s England
DESCRIPTION:Location: Royce Hall 314 and over Zoom. All attendees must register here: https://ucla.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAkcuysrjwvH9X2287GIVKY5fD2_Jgs1DVg \nEvent Time: 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM \nUCLA’s CMRS Center for Early Global Studies \nDistinguished Visiting Scholar Lecture \nSusan Phillips (Department of English\, Northwestern University) \nRescheduled from April 30\, 2020. Please see event registration details below. \nWhat happens when the schoolmaster is banished from the early modern classroom? The popular vernacular textbooks that flooded the European market in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries posed precisely this question when they claimed—on title pages and in prefatory material—not simply to stand in for the schoolmaster\, but to displace him altogether. Most were practical how-to guides that offered entertaining dialogues and real-world scenarios to an audience of linguists of the lower orders\, readers who sought not a thorough and grammatical knowledge of other languages\, but practical lessons in conversation. Yet these texts did not simply eschew linguistic and grammatical discipline\, they flouted the rules of ethical\, moral\, and social discipline that governed the premodern classroom\, adopting the unruly premodern marketplace as the scene of their instruction. Opening up virtual classrooms that modelled all manner of transgression: from insults and pick up lines to passing off faulty coins and welching on debts\, these little books taught readers both the language of the multilingual market and the tricks of its trade. \nProfessor Phillips is Alumnae of Northwestern University Teaching Professor and Associate Professor of English at Northwestern University. Her book\, Transforming Talk: The Problem with Gossip in Late Medieval England (Penn State 2007) explores the religious\, cultural\, and literary work of “idle talk” in late medieval England. Winner of two Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities Fellowships\, she has published essays on Chaucer\, gossip theory\, late medieval pastoral practice\, Renaissance dictionaries\, medieval multilingualism\, and pre-modern pedagogy. She is currently completing her second monograph\, Learning to Talk Shop: Mercantile Mischief and Popular Pedagogy in Premodern England\, which traces the cultural history of the dictionaries\, phrasebooks\, and guides to conversation that flooded the European marketplace from the fifteenth through the seventeenth centuries. These bestsellers taught readers not only how to conjugate verbs and negotiate with foreign merchants\, but also how to insult neighbors and chat up chambermaids in up to eight different languages. More than simply entertaining content\, these mischievous conversations constitute a new pedagogical practice\, as language learning itself underwent a translation out of the classroom\, into the marketplace\, and further down the social ladder. \nCo-sponsored by the UCLA Department of English. \nHOW TO ATTEND THIS EVENT \nThis will be a hybrid event\, taking place in-person and online simultaneously. All attendees must register at this link on Zoom where you will be asked whether you will attend on site or online: https://ucla.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAkcuysrjwvH9X2287GIVKY5fD2_Jgs1DVg \nThe lecture will be held in Royce Hall 314. If you wish to attend in-person\, please note: in accordance with the current mandate from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health\, all attendees\, regardless of vaccination status\, are required to wear masks indoors (children under age 2 are exempt). Attending UCLA faculty\, staff\, and students must show their UCLA Covid-19 Symptom Monitoring Clearance Certificate\, as part the entry procedure. All guests must show proof of being fully vaccinated or a negative COVID test within 72 hours of the event upon entry.
