SUMMARY:Hammer Poetry Series: Maureen McLane
DESCRIPTION:Maureen McLane\, poet\, literary critic\, and connoisseur of both the canon and the experimental tradition\, epitomizes Wallace Steven’s dictum that “poetry is the scholar’s art.” Her six distinguished volumes of poems include World Enough\, chosen Best Poetry Book of the Year by Paul Muldoon in The New Yorker\, and her genre-breaking book of criticism and biography My Poets was lauded as “the survey course of my dreams” by Loren Stein. As Christine Smallwood described her manifold talent in Harper’s\, McLane’s “mix of the humorous and the cerebral is at once exuberant and rinsed with melancholy.” \nOrganized and hosted by poet\, literary critic\, and UCLA Distinguished Research Professor Stephen Yenser. Cosponsored by UCLA English and UCLA Recreation. \nLimited books available for purchase. \nQuestions about the event?\nVisit the Hammer Museum for full details.

SUMMARY:Black Age: Oceanic Lifespans and the Time of Black Life
DESCRIPTION:Register here to attend. A light lunch will be provided. An RSVP is required to attend. \nJoin us for our Kanner Forum featuring Dr. Habiba Ibrahim\, Professor and Associate Chair of English at the University of Washington. In this presentation Dr. Ibrahim will discuss her recent work\, Black Age: Oceanic Lifespans and the Time of Black Life (NYU Press\, 2021). Black Age tracks how age for people of the Black diaspora has been historically constituted as “untimely.” Black Age argues that over various phases of the transatlantic slave trade\, the Black body had been separated from hegemonic relations to liberal humanist measures of time on various scales. Constituted through processes of violence and reasoning that alienated bodies from historical\, developmental\, and legal schedules of time\, Black age became contingent\, malleable\, and suited for the needs of enslavement. \nThe talk will be followed by a Q & A moderated by Yogita Goyal\, Professor of African American Studies and English at UCLA. \nHabiba Ibrahim is Professor and Associate Chair of English at the University of Washington. She is the author of Black Age: Oceanic Lifespans and the Time of Black \nLife (2021) and Troubling the Family: The Promise of Personhood and the Rise of Multiracialism (2012). \nQuestions about the event?\nEmail: englishevents@ucla.edu

SUMMARY:One Million Experiments

Check back soon for more information about the organizers who will be joining us! \nRegister here to attend. \nOne Million Experiments is a multimodal project that explores how we define and create safety in the world without the use of prisons or police. Developed by Damon A. Williams and Daniel Kisslinger in partnership with Interrupting Criminalization and Project Nia\, One Million Experiments includes a podcast\, documentary film\, and a curated collection of community-based safety projects working to build solutions that are grounded in transformation instead of punishment. The point of One Million Experiments is not to find permanent solutions to ever-changing problems\, but to gather more ideas\, tools\, and skills so that we don’t have to start from scratch every time. \nThe screening will be followed by a discussion and Q & A moderated by Robin D.G. Kelley\, Distinguished Professor and Gary B. Nash Endowed Chair in U.S. History at UCLA. \nThis event is co-sponsored by UCLA’s Ralph J. SUMMARY:Tea and Conversation: Kate Bolton Bonnici
DESCRIPTION:Join UCLA English for the Grace M. Hunt Memorial English Reading Room Writers Series: Tea and Conversation with Kate Bolton Bonnici. \nRegister here to attend. \nKate Bolton Bonnici will read from her latest poetry collection\, A True & Just Record. The reading will be followed by a discussion of her writing\, led by Professor Marissa López. \nHecate-like\, A True & Just Record invites us to the three- way crossroads of poetry\, feminist rhetorics\, and early modern studies. Kate Bolton Bonnici weaves together archival materials from the English witch trials\, 20th- century poets and philosophers\, and her own family. With fury and care\, haunted by absences\, these poems — all also forms of experimental scholarship — interrogate\, disrupt\, and play. \nDr. Kate Bolton Bonnici grew up in Alabama and holds degrees from Harvard\, NYU Law (JD)\, UC Riverside (MFA)\, and UCLA (PhD). Her debut collection\, Night Burial\, won the 2020 Colorado Prize for Poetry. Her second collection\, A True & Just Record\, was published in 2023 by Boiler House Press/Beyond Criticism Editions. Her work has appeared in The Georgia Review\, The Maine Review\, Image\, CounterText\, Exemplaria\, and elsewhere. Kate is an assistant nonfiction editor at Tupelo Press and an Assistant Professor of English at Pepperdine University.

SUMMARY:Lecture by Joe Bristow: The Final Hours of Oscar Wilde: “My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death”
DESCRIPTION:William Andrews Clark Lecture on Oscar Wilde \nLecture by Joseph Bristow\, Distinguished Professor of English\, University of California\, Los Angeles \nThis lecture sheds fresh light on the forty-six-year-old Oscar Wilde’s early death from encephalomeningitis at the shabby Hôtel d’Alsace on Friday\, November 30\, 1900\, in the Latin Quarter of Paris. By drawing on documents held at the Clark Library that have seldom been consulted before\, Professor Bristow will look closely at the rapid turns of events that impacted Wilde’s final hours. The Clark Library has recently catalogued the extensive papers of the Irish Passionist priest Father Cuthbert Dunne\, who converted Wilde on his deathbed to the Church of Rome. The library also houses many letters by Reginald Turner\, the loyal friend who remained at the incapacitated Wilde’s bedside for several weeks. These items reveal the urgent financial\, legal\, and religious matters that attended Wilde’s demise. The talk will also discuss Wilde’s indebtedness to the hotel proprietor Jean Dupoirier\, who soon after Wilde’s death turned his former guest’s insalubrious bedroom into a shrine for the writer’s most devoted acolytes. \nJoseph Bristow is Distinguished Professor of English at the University of California\, Los Angeles. His most recent books are Oscar Wilde on Trial: The Criminal Proceedings\, from Arrest to Imprisonment (Yale University Press\, 2022) and an edited collection\, Extraordinary Aesthetes: Decadents\, New Women\, and Fin-de-Siècle Culture (University of Toronto Press\, 2023). He is currently co-editing (with Yvonne Ivory and Rebecca N. Mitchell) the Oxford English Texts edition of Wilde’s uncollected\, unfinished\, and miscellaneous writings. His current book project is “Queer Blackmail: English Cultures of Extortion\, 1776–1967.” \n\nThe lecture is free to attend with advance registration. It will be held in-person at the Clark Library and livestreamed on the Center’s YouTube Channel. No registration is required to watch the livestream. The registration form will post here approximately one month in advance of the program. Seating is limited at the Clark Library; walk-in registrants are welcome as space permits. \n\nImage: “Photo taken by Robert Ross of Oscar Wilde two hours after death by flash light\,” 3:50pm\, Friday\, November 30\, 1900 \nInscription\, in ink\, on verso: “Photo taken by Robert Ross of Oscar Wilde 2 hours after death\, by flashlight. Nov 30th 1900.” Stamped\, in ink\, on verso: “To the appointment to T.M. The King and Queen\, William E. Gray\, 92\, Queen’s Rd.\, Bayswater\, W. Fine Art Photographer.” With envelope from “Harrison Hale Schaff\, Attorney at Law\, 31 Beacon Street\, Boston” that is inscribed in ink: “Photo of Oscar Wilde taken by Robert Ross\, his endorsement on the back.” The photograph was taken by Maurice Gilbert\, likely with Wilde’s Kodak camera. SUMMARY:Instruments for Digital Storytelling Featuring Erik Loyer
DESCRIPTION:Artist and technologist Erik Loyer shares his practice of digital instrument-making\, and the ways in which he draws from comics\, games\, music\, and film to make art\, tell stories\, and build creative tools. Loyer will explore how approaching each interaction as an invitation extended by the user — whether on the web\, mobile\, or in virtual reality — can help to shake up how we think about digital storytelling. \nRegister here to attend. \nErik Loyer (he/him) makes digital artworks and creative tools that combine elements of comics and video games with musical performance. Through his studio Opertoon\, Loyer has released a variety of story- and music-driven projects including the touchscreen meditation Strange Rain and the digital graphic novel Upgrade Soul. Loyer has also originated a pair of creative tools\, Stepworks and Panoply\, which have been utilized in workshops in the U.S. and Europe\, as well as in award-winning releases like Danish indie game Stilstand. Loyer is currently a creative technologist at the regenerative design studio Spherical\, crafting interactive media to support the renewal of Los Angeles County’s water infrastructure.
