SUMMARY:Job Talk by Summer Kim Lee
DESCRIPTION:Summer Kim Lee\, Mellon Faculty Fellow\, English and Creative Writing\, Dartmouth College \nTalk Title: “Cold Leftovers: Touching Asian Femininity’s Material Remains”\nTalk Description\nThis talk engages with iterations of exoticized\, hypersexualized Asian femininity in David Henry Hwang’s play M. Butterfly (1988)\, filmmaker and scholar Mila Zuo’s short film Carnal Orient (2016)\, and artist Alison Kuo’s durational performance Bone Bath (2017). Together\, these objects render Asian femininity not as the provenance of political subjecthood\, but as political subjecthood’s cold leftovers—as its visceral\, material remains. While recent scholarship has understood Asian femininity to be synthetic and inorganic\, the matter of the feminized Asian body still remains: a fleshy\, feeling form with the desire to at times touch and be touched by another. How does a turn to sense and sensation\, coursing underneath the privileged\, primary realms of the textual and visual\, shift the political and aesthetic stakes of how a body in its material difference encounters another? Contrary to the notion that coldness signals disaffection and inscrutability\, here it expresses the fraught\, sensuous life of racialized\, feminized materiality and its ambivalent want for touch\, as a potential source of pleasure\, intimacy\, and care\, but also of harm\, injury\, and consumption. This talk stages encounters with Asian femininity in order to reinvest in feminist accounts of the gendered\, racialized body as matter to be handled in the everyday challenges of living in relation to others. \n

SUMMARY:Job talk by Nicole Gervasio
DESCRIPTION:Testimony for the Future: State Redemption as an Art of the Impossible in Contemporary Novels on Genocide \nIn my book project\, “Arts of the Impossible: Decolonial Feminist Approaches to Reconstructing State Memory and Collective Trauma in Contemporary Literature\,” I examine how and why non-Western writers from 1984 to the present fabricate several genres of archival evidence to contest key structural absences in the representation\, memory\, and narratives of modern state violence. I specifically focus on novels by politically engaged authors who critique genocide\, femicide\, and forced disappearance as explicitly heteropatriarchal\, white supremacist\, imperial technologies of authoritarian repression\, including Caryl Phillips\, Edwidge Danticat\, Cristina Peri Rossi\, Roberto Bolaño\, Michael Ondaatje\, Madeleine Thien\, Tommy Orange\, and Boubacar Boris Diop. I take a decolonial feminist approach to trauma studies to scrutinize how these human rights crimes are designed to exert what I call “ontological erasure” on dissident bodies\, whereby the motive is not merely to murder the flesh\, but to render personhood conceptually immaterial and identity unviable. I argue that these writers’ interventions not only metapolitically pursue an always already impossible feat: the radical reconstruction of state archives that are strategically organized to evade moral responsibility for the most incriminating truths\, as feminist theorists of colonial archives\, like Ann Laura Stoler\, Lisa Lowe\, and Saidiya Hartman\, have shown. These writers’ efforts to novelize archival forms also expose gaps and weaknesses in the internal logics of evidentiary standards for justice that privilege Western epistemes as universals. In this talk\, I highlight the testimonial form\, one of five evidentiary types I distinguish (the others being documentarian\, forensic\, analogical\, and phenomenological)\, in two novels reconstructing genocides in the twentieth century. The first is the 1937 Parsley Massacre in Danticat’s The Farming of Bones and\, the second\, the 1994 Rwandan genocide in Diop’s Murambi: The Book of Bones. I argue that both writers emphasize unmarried\, non-reproductive women’s first-person points of view not only to recover missing testimonies from marginalized perspectives. They also expose the many ways in which these suppressed testimonies ironically attest to the state’s failures to transform its racial\, gender\, sexual\, and class order so as to thwart the recurrence of genocide in the future.

SUMMARY:Re-Charge: Postcolonial Studies and Energy Humanities
DESCRIPTION:What do Postcolonial Studies and Energy Humanities have to stay to one another? Given that the former is by now a well-established academic field and the latter a recently emergent one\, we might expect the relationship between the two to be marked by wars of position and anxieties of influence. In this essay\, however\, I suggest that there is much to gain from cross-fertilisation and cross-hatching between the two. If Postcolonial Studies have often\, with some justice\, been accused of evacuating the matter of history from its purview\, Energy Humanities has sometimes suffered from insufficient attention to the dynamics of empire. By comparing two classic colonial texts from 19th-century South Asia by Rudyard Kipling and Dinabandhu Mitra\, I suggest that we can go beyond this impasse by looking at how the intersections between energy and empire had already been examined thoroughly by writers long before the formation of the academic disciplines that today take them as their area of study. As ever\, it is to literature and culture we must turn in order to appreciate the limits and possibilities of theory. \nThis lecture was made possible by the support of the Department of English\, the Nineteenth-Century Group\, and the Postcolonial Theory & Literary Studies Group. \nhttp://postcolonial.english.ucla.edu/colloquium/

SUMMARY:Gayatri Gopinath Job Talk
DESCRIPTION:“Unruly Visions: The Queer Regional Imaginaries of Sunil Gupta and Agha Shahid Ali” \nABSTRACT:  This talk considers the work of two contemporary South Asian diasporic artists\, the poet Agha Shahid Ali and the photographer Sunil Gupta\, within the framework of archive\, region\, and affect that Gopinath develops in her recently published book Unruly Visions.  Gopinath understands the work of Ali and Gupta as emblematic of what she terms “the aesthetic practices of queer diaspora.” These are practices thatnegotiate the intersection of race\, sexuality\, and migration in multiple geographic locations. She argues that through a sustained engagement with queer aesthetic practices\, we can identify alternative ways of both seeing and knowing capable of challenging the scopic and sensorial regimes of colonial modernity as they persist in the present.
