SUMMARY:Ecology\, Memory\, Poetry: Reading Paul Celan in the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:The Lab for Environmental Narrative Strategies (LENS) and the Working Group in Memory Studies present: Ecology\, Memory\, Poetry: Reading Paul Celan in the Anthropocene \nPaul Celan\, one of the most important poets of post-World War II literature\, is famous for his lyrical engagements with memory and the Holocaust. In recent years\, he has also been read as a poet who addresses some of the most fundamental issues of environmental thought and writing in the Anthropocene: deep time\, altered landscapes\, new materialisms\, posthumanisms\, expressions of more-than-human loss\, and poetry in its relation to geology. This roundtable brings together two experts on Celan and the environmental humanities – Jason Groves and Paweł Piszczatowski–with a poet and researcher\, Rachel Kaufman\, to explore Celan as an environmental poet. \nA roundtable with: \nJason Groves (University of Washington)\nAuthor of The Geological Unconscious: German Literature and Mineral Imaginary (2020) \nRachel Kaufman (UCLA)\nAuthor of Many to Remember (2021) \nPaweł Piszczatowski (University of Warsaw)\nAuthor of Chthonic Shards: Paul Celan’s Poetics of Earth (2026) \nModerators: Ursula K. Heise and Michael Rothberg \nCo-Sponsored by the Department of English

SUMMARY:Anti-Zionism: A Jewish History
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Kanner Forum featuring Benjamin Moser\, author of Anti-Zionism: A Jewish History. \nIn Anti-Zionism: A Jewish History\, Benjamin Moser uncovers a suppressed tradition that has shaped Jewish thought for generations. Through a cast of artists\, rabbis\, poets\, lawyers\, activists\, journalists\, and politicians—from Europe and Africa and Asia and Latin America—Moser traces a lineage of Jewish dissenters who confronted Zionism’s moral and political stakes—often at devastating personal cost\, including censorship\, exile\, and death. \nRegister here to attend. \nBenjamin Moser is the author of Why This World: A Biography of Clarice Lispector\, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and a New York Times Notable Book of 2009. For his work bringing Clarice Lispector to international prominence\, he received Brazil’s first State Prize for Cultural Diplomacy. Sontag: Her Life and Work won the Pulitzer Prize in 2020\, and The Upside-Down World: Meetings with the Dutch Masters appeared in 2023. He completed the present book at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library. \nQuestions about the event?\nEmail: englishevents@ucla.edu

SUMMARY:40th Anniversary Celebration of the Center for 17th- & 18th-Century Studies
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the 40th anniversary of the UCLA Center for 17th- & 18th-Century Studies\, the nation’s first research center for early modern studies. Founded in 1985\, the Center provides a forum for the discussion of central issues in the field of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century studies\, and organizes a wide range of academic and cultural programs. Additionally\, the Center administers the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library\, located on a historic property in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles\, which serves as the research laboratory for a distinguished array of fellows working either in early modern studies or the fin-de-siècle world of Oscar Wilde. \nRegister here to attend. This event is free to attend with advance registration and will be held in-person on the UCLA campus in Royce Hall 314 and 306. Seating is limited; walk-in registrants are welcome as space permits. Registration will close on Thursday\, October 1\, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. \nThe program features a talk presented by UCLA Professor of English Helen Deutsch\, who served as the Center & Clark’s Director for a four year-term from 2017 to 2020. Following the talk\, guests are invited to mingle with friends and colleagues in Royce 306\, where they can add a message to the 40th anniversary Padlet\, view a display of Center & Clark ephemera and a slideshow\, and enjoy a reception on the terrace. \nAt a moment when higher education is under siege\, the study of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries might seem a luxury at best\, irrelevant at worst. Professor Deutsch’s talk\, a review and celebration of the Center and its history\, refutes such assumptions. She will argue that the work of the Center and its partner the Clark—research\, musical and theatrical performance\, conferences\, collaborations in many forms—is not a retreat to the past but rather an ongoing engagement with our present. Critical University Studies scholar Christopher Newfield has recently described universities as “places of unique challenge\, novelty\, and happiness\, of intellectual revolutions and personal transformations.”  The Center is just such a place\, and our imaginative and intellectual investments in the past illuminate the ways in which such revolutions are both rooted in history and ongoing collective projects of the utmost relevance. \nProfessor Deutsch joined UCLA’s English department in 1995 and was first affiliated with the Center & Clark as an Ahmanson-Getty postdoctoral fellow in 1992–93. In addition to serving as Director\, she has assisted the Center & Clark in many capacities over the years\, including as Clark Professor in 2005–06\, and as a member and chair of the Faculty Advisory Committee. \nHer research is fueled by the love of literature and the love of authors. She practices a unique kind of feminist historical formalism that reads texts in relationship to the embodied lives of the writers who produced them. Her first two books consider the singular bodies of Alexander Pope and Samuel Johnson in symbiotic relationship to each author’s uniquely imitative literary style and contested critical reception. \nHer most recent book\, The Last Amateur\, goes beyond the single-author framework to consider what it means to learn to love one author through another\, and to be transformed in the process. Deutsch scrutinizes Edward Said’s career-long conversation with Jonathan Swift\, which began with an unfinished book (a part of which was presented at the Clark)\, in order to raise questions of her own about the path of literary studies. At a time when many in the field have lost faith in critique\, she shows how passion and refusal of professional propriety—the hallmarks of the amateur—can enliven critique again. \nIn addition to serving as departmental Vice Chair for Graduate Studies\, she successfully spearheaded the founding of UCLA’s interdisciplinary Disability Studies Minor\, which she chaired from 2006 to 2011. She has been a member at large of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies\, chair of the Division for Restoration and Early Eighteenth-Century Literature of the Modern Language Association\, an advisory editor for PMLA\, the association’s journal\, and a member of its Committee on Disability Issues in the Profession.

SUMMARY:Medieval Texts Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Medieval Texts Reading Group welcomes undergraduate students\, graduate students\, staff\, and faculty interested in medieval literature. Once each term\, we get together to discuss a text in English translation from across the Global Middle Ages\, to think about what it tells us about its cultural and literary context. Each discussion will be led by an expert on the chosen text and its place in the wider medieval world. No expertise or preparation beyond a brief skim of the text is required – only enthusiasm! \nFor our Fall meeting this year\, we will read 14th century wills from Zadar\, Croatia. Discussion will be led by Dr. Giulia Giamboni (John W. Baldwin Post-Doctoral Fellow\, CMRS-Center for Early Global Studies). \nFOR READINGS\nhttps://ucla.app.box.com/s/y5w471d8l1ezijdn0gdzf7lz0qfoy3bn \nContact: Matthew Fisher (fisher@humnet.ucla.edu)
