SUMMARY:Kanner Forum: Matthew Vernon
DESCRIPTION:Join UCLA English for a talk featuring Matthew Vernon\, Associate Professor of English Literature at the University of California\, Davis. Professor Vernon will discuss Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s adaptation of Everyman as it relates to invisibilization of race. Professor Vernon will focus on the problems and possibilities this play raises in relation to politics and race through the Middle Ages. \nThe talk will be followed by a Q & A moderated by UCLA English Professor Matthew Fisher. This event is co-sponsored by UCLA’s Department of African American Studies\, Department of Comparative Literature and CMRS Center for Early Global Studies. \nRegister here for onsite attendance in Kaplan Hall 193 or online attendance on Zoom. \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the event. \nMatthew Vernon is an Associate Professor of English Literature at the University of California\, Davis. His first book\, The Black Middle Ages\, explores the understudied relationship between medievalism and Blackness in nineteenth and twentieth-century literature. He has also written articles on a set of his interests around issues of race and genre. This has led to articles on the post-truth phenomenon in nineteenth-century novels\, Black speculative fiction\, and comic books about displacement and vulnerability. He is currently working on an article on the adaptation of the medieval play\, Everyman. \nMatthew Fisher is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at UCLA. His first book\, Scribal Authorship and the Writing of History in Medieval England (2012)\, examines the entangled work of medieval scribes and the writers of history. He is currently writing a book about library fires and the afterlife of medieval manuscripts from the Dissolution to the 18th Century. In addition to his published academic essays and articles\, he has also written for Public Books and Zocalo Public Square. He is the editor of the journal Viator. \nQuestions about the event?\nContact Marta Wallien\, Programs and Media Manager\nmwallien@english.ucla.edu

SUMMARY:Some Favorite Writers: Geoff Dyer
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated writer Geoff Dyer returns with The Last Days of Roger Federer\, an extended meditation on late style and last works. Here Dyer reads from this latest collection\, one of Esquire’s best of spring 2022. \nReadings are followed by a discussion with author and UCLA professor Mona Simpson\, who organizes this series. Supported in part by the UCLA Department of English. \nRegister for this event here. \nWhen artists and athletes age\, what happens to their work? Does it ripen or rot? Achieve a new serenity or succumb to an escalating torment? As our bodies decay\, how do we keep on? In this beguiling meditation\, Geoff Dyer sets his own encounter with late middle age against the last days and last works of writers\, painters\, footballers\, musicians\, and tennis stars who’ve mattered to him throughout his life. With a playful charm and penetrating intelligence\, he recounts Friedrich Nietzsche’s breakdown in Turin\, Bob Dylan’s reinventions of old songs\, J. M. W. Turner’s paintings of abstracted light\, John Coltrane’s cosmic melodies\, Bjorn Borg’s defeats\, and Beethoven’s final quartets—and considers the intensifications and modifications of experience that come when an ending is within sight. Throughout\, he stresses the accomplishments of uncouth geniuses who defied convention\, and went on doing so even when their beautiful youths were over. \nRanging from Burning Man and the Doors to the nineteenth-century Alps and back\, Dyer’s book on last things is also a book about how to go on living with art and beauty—and on the entrancing effect and sudden illumination that an Art Pepper solo or Annie Dillard reflection can engender in even the most jaded and ironic sensibilities. Praised by Steve Martin for his “hilarious tics” and by Tom Bissell as “perhaps the most bafflingly great prose writer at work in the English language today\,” Dyer has now blended criticism\, memoir\, and humorous banter of the most serious kind into something entirely new. The Last Days of Roger Federer is a summation of Dyer’s passions\, and the perfect introduction to his sly and joyous work. \nGeoff Dyer was born in Cheltenham\, England\, in 1958. He was educated at the local Grammar School and Corpus Christi College\, Oxford. He is currently living in Los Angeles where he is a writer in residence at USC. His new book See/Saw: Looking at Photographs will be released in spring 2022. \nHe is the author of four novels: Paris Trance\, The Search\, The Colour of Memory\, and Jeff in Venice\, Death in Varanasi; a critical study of John Berger\, Ways of Telling; two collections of essays\, Anglo-English Attitudes and Working the Room; and many genre-defying books: But Beautiful\, The Missing of the Somme\, Out of Sheer Rage\, Yoga For People Who Can’t Be Bothered To Do It\, The Ongoing Moment\, Zona\, about Andrei Tarkovsky’s film Stalker\, Another Great Day at Sea: Life Aboard the USS George H W Bush\, White Sands: Experiences from the Outside World\, The Street Philosophy of Garry Winogrand\, and “Broadsword Calling Danny Boy\,” about the film Where Eagles Dare. He is the editor of John Berger: Selected Essays\, Life with a Capital L: Selected Essays by D H Lawrence\, and co-editor\, with Margaret Sartor\, of What Was True: The Photographs and Notebooks of William Gedney. \nA selection of essays from Anglo-English Attitudes and Working the Room entitled Otherwise Known as the Human Condition was published in 2011 and won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism. \nHe has been a visiting professor at the University of Iowa\, Columbia University in New York\, and the Michener Center for Writers at University of Texas in Austin. in 2014\, he was a Mellon Distinguished Scholar at Wits University in Johannesburg. He is currently writer in residence at the University of Southern California\, Los Angeles. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature\, an Honorary Fellow of Corpus Christi College\, Oxford\, and in 2015 was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. \nQuestions about the event?\nVisit the Hammer Museum for full details.

SUMMARY:Barbara L. Packer Lecture: Yopie Prins
DESCRIPTION:Join UCLA English for the Barbara L. Packer Lectures featuring Yopie Prins\, the Irene Butter Collegiate Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan. \nTuesday\, May 17 at 5:00pm – 6:30pm PST: Anne Carson [     ] Sappho \nIn If Not\, Winter: Fragments of Sappho (2002)\, Anne Carson famously uses brackets [     ] in her translations from Greek to English\, to mark what is missing from the Sapphic fragments and also to imply “a space for imaginal adventure.” In her talk\, Professor Prins looks more closely at how the bracket itself is translated in Carson’s reworking of Sappho in other media: a hand-painted mini-book\, the environmental installation of “Cliff Sappho\,” and a performance piece entitled “BRACKO.” \nRegister here for onsite attendance in Kaplan Hall 193 or online attendance on Zoom. \nThursday\, May 19 at 5:00pm – 6:30pm PST: Reversing Classical Meters \nIn her talk\, Professor Prins asks what is the past and future of classical models for English versification? Nineteenth-century ideas about the revival of classical meters in English poetry prompted a wide range of metrical experiments in Victorian England and America: strange attempts to translate quantitative classical verse into English accentual-syllabic verse\, and conversely\, to translate English verse into Greek and Latin meters. Was this a dead-end for Victorian prosody? How might we read the reversing of Classical meters today? \nRegister here for onsite attendance in Kaplan Hall 193 or online attendance on Zoom. \nBoth lectures are co-sponsored by UCLA Department of Classics. \nYopie Prins is the Irene Butter Collegiate Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan.  She is the author of Victorian Sappho (1999) and Ladies’ Greek: Victorian Translations of Tragedy (2017) and co-editor\, with Virginia Jackson\, of The Lyric Theory Reader (2014). \nPer UCLA COVID-19 protocols\, all attendees are required to complete the UCLA COVID-19 Symptom Monitoring Survey in order to enter the event.
