Call for Papers

Submission Deadline: April 5, 2019

The Academic Conference for English Students (ACES) provides a collaborative forum for students of literature to give oral presentations of their research and creative work. The program committee invites and encourages all English and American Literature and Culture majors and English minors to submit for consideration the best academic essays or examples of creative writing on any topic or theme they have produced in an English course at UCLA. This includes work that students have completed, or are in the process of completing, for a course, as well as independent academic or creative proposals. Students in related fields of literary, linguistic, film, or cultural studies are also encouraged to submit their work for consideration.

Students whose work is accepted will be assigned to a panel of other speakers and a moderator. They will deliver their presentations at a designated time on the day of the conference, with consecutive panels and roundtable presentations held throughout the day.

Submissions can be any length, however, accepted papers must be edited before the conference to fit the 15-minute time slot allocated for each speaker. That means final papers of about 7.5 typed, double-spaced pages or no more than 2,000 words. (Creative writing submissions may be shorter than this required limit).

If you originally composed your work for a UCLA course, please include the course number and professor name with your submission.

All participants are encouraged to attend a faculty-led session focused on preparing a successful presentation prior to the conference. (Details TBA).

Please send all submissions via email to ACES@english.ucla.edu.

Departmental Honors students completing theses in Winter/Spring 2019 should refer to participation guidelines for the Departmental Honors showcase, a related event designed for Honors program participants.
