Self-Care and Pleasure Activism: Research, Theory and Praxis

Join UCLA English for a seminar featuring Dr. Sami Schalk, associate professor of Gender & Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Schalk will discuss her co-authored article, “Re-claiming the Radical Politics of Self-Care,” (co-authored with Jina B. Kim in American Quarterly) and her current project on the practice of pleasure activism. Participants will be asked to explore how our lives, identities and politics influence our research, theory and praxis. Please note that this is a closed seminar and an RSVP is required to attend.

Dr. Sami Schalk is an associate professor of Gender & Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focuses on race, disability and gender in contemporary American literature and culture. She is the author of Bodyminds Reimagined (Duke 2018) and Black Disability Politics. Schalk is also a fat Black queer disabled femme, public intellectual and pleasure activist.
