In Memoriam: Michael J. B. Allen

March 3, 2023

April 1, 1941 – February 25, 2023

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Distinguished Research Professor Michael J. B. Allen. Professor Allen was a distinguished professor, engaging teacher, accomplished scholar, dynamic raconteur, avid hiker, and loving family man. Professor Allen began teaching at UCLA in 1970. His teaching focused on the range of English literature from the Anglo-Saxons to Milton, and especially Chaucer, Donne, and Shakespeare. His research focus, however, turned toward the philosophical, theological, magical, and mythological issues explored by the fifteenth century Italian Platonists, Marsilio Ficino and Pico della Mirandola. Professor Allen was Director of the UCLA Center for Medieval & Renaissance Studies from 1988-1993, Senior Editor of Renaissance Quarterly from 1993-2001, Phi Beta Kappa National Visiting Scholar from 2007-2008, and President of the Renaissance Society of America from 2006- 2008.

An obituary is available online as well as a remembrance page at the UCLA Center for Medieval & Renaissance Studies’ website. A memorial event is planned for 2 April in Royce 314: you can RSVP and find some additional details at www.michaeljballen.com.
