Jeffrey Masten has written influentially on the importance of sexuality-studies methods for reading early modern literature and culture.  His books include Textual Intercourse: Collaboration, Authorship, and Sexualities in Renaissance Drama (Cambridge, 1997) and Queer Philologies: Sex, Language, and Affect in Shakespeare’s Time (Penn, 2016, forthcoming in paperback), and his articles include writing about textual editing, attribution methods, book history, and early women’s writing.

American Writers and Artists in Florence: Summer 2019 Travel Study Info Session

This Summer Travel Study program examines the experiences of some of the most important American writers and artists who spent time in Florence, the beautiful Tuscan city where the Italian Renaissance originated. This info session is led by Program Director and English Department Faculty, Professor Chris Looby. He will discuss everything you need to know about the program and what to expect when you arrive including: coursework, excursions, lodging, among other questions related to your daily life while in Florence.

Tony Hoagland writes that Mary Ruefle combines “the spiritual desperation of Dickinson with the rhetorical virtuosity of Wallace Stevens” in a “poetry at once ornate and intense; linguistically marvelous, yes, but also as visceral as anything you are likely to encounter.” Ruefle has written across several genres (including the comic book, “erasure” poetry, and essays) and is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and a Whiting Award.

Raúl Coronado is a literary and intellectual historian. He’s an Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley, and is the author of A World Not to Come: A History of Latino Writing and Print Culture (Harvard 2013), winner of the MLA Best First Book Prize, the American Studies Association John Hope Franklin Prize for Best Book in American Studies, and five other awards.
