David Wong Louie Memorial Conference

When: Friday, November 15, 2019 10:00 am
Where: Royce Hall 314

A conference to commemorate David Wong Louie’s writing and teaching legacy by bringing together scholars, writers, and student that were and continue to be influenced and inspired by Louie’s work.

Internationally recognized as a literary pioneer in Chinese-American writing in several genres—novel, short story, and personal essay—Louie forged a powerfully eloquent voice that mapped with deep sensitivity and darkly comic wit the trials and hard-won insights born of inhabiting and navigating the difficult and often invisible spaces between white America and Chinese America.

David Wong Louie’s award winning work includes a novel, The Barbarians are Coming, and a collection of short stories, Pangs of Love, recently republished by University of Washington Press. The latest edition of Pangs of Love includes an introduction by Pulitzer winning author, Viet Thanh Nguyen, who will offer the keynote address at the conference, and a afterword by UCLA professor King-Kok Cheung, who will moderate the academic panel.

Additional speakers:

Marilyn Chin, Professor Emerita at San Diego State University and Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.

Fred D’Aguiar, Professor of English, UCLA.

David Eng, Richard L. Fisher Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor in Asian American Studies, Comparative Literature & Literary Theory, and Gender, Sexuality & Women’s Studies.
